What About The Fish?

This post comes from a class discussion we had in Sunday School this morning. Our teacher pointed out that in the key verse of our lesson, Genesis 7:23, it says that every living thing was destroyed that "was upon the face of the ground...", that he had not caught that detail until studying for this morning's lesson, and that he had always believed that all living creatures died. Upon further investigating the passage, it always mentions "every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort." Nothing is ever mentioned of the fish dying. 7:22 gives further credence to the position that perhaps fish were not included: "...All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died." What think ye?

  1. I don't think I've ever heard anyone think fish died in the flood. Fish aren't fleshy creatures.

  2. I was always taught, and I think most others were, that ALL living creatures died (without distinction). I also want to say I've seen pictures of fish in the Ark.

Also, to add to my post, the fact that the Bible makes the distinction between those creatures who breath air through the nostrils attests to its authenticity as the respiration by fish through their gills had not been discovered.

  3. "most others"... I doubt that's the case. I've always heard in every church that fish, many bugs, and plant life were not taken on the ark b/c they could survive without it.

  4. well...it was fairly new to me and no one at our church had ever heard it. The first time I heard of it was about 3 years ago in the Young Peoples' class at Spann's Chapel. Talked to my dad and he said he knew that but had just never brought it out but focused on the people who rejected Noah's message.

  5. Better question. Do we have record of Noah preaching a message of "repent and enter the ark" or is this pure speculation? In other words, just because he preached righteousness... does this mean God commanded Noah to ask others to come in, or was it God's plan for ONLY Noah and family to enter the ark?

  6. What was Moses' message of righteousness?

  7. I don't know Brother Mike. What was it? The Bible doesn't say "message of righteousness", so I assume your answer will be speculation.

As to other possible ways Noah could have (speculation also) preached righteousness... He could have preached long before the flood - you folks need to turn to the LORD. The fact that Noah was a preacher of righteousness does not change the fact that the Bible mentions nothing about asking folks to enter the ark. As a matter of fact, if God told Noah to bring his family on the ark, and he preached "everyone else come on the ark", would this not be a message of unrighteousness, since it was not condoned by God?

  8. James,

What do you think Noah's message was? Start with Genesis 6:8: "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD." Righteousness was found then as it always has since Adam's fall: in Jesus Christ. And brother, that's no speculation.

  9. He could have preached "Accept the coming Messiah" which would have nothing to do with the ark, unless God wanted the ark to be preached as a type of Christ at that time. It is very possible God did not want anyone else saved in that flood than Noah and his family.

He could have preached most his life, before he was told to build the ark. He still would have been a preacher of righteousness.

I'm simply saying that to claim he preached "Enter the ark and be saved" is pure speculation, and we have no Scripture to back it up. If someone does, I'd be glad to see it so that I will know the truth of that particular matter. I will gladly admit I was wrong. At this time, though, I've just never found any verse(s) that suggest any such message proceeding from Noah's mouth.
