The Revelation of God
This question was brought up by our instructor, Bro. Crain, at the end of our systematic theology class today. Since revelation from God to man has been completed in the Word of God, has God revealed all there is to know about Himself to man?
I would answer that although we are aware of God's characteristics (omnipotent, omniscient, etc.), we will better comprehend and appreciate God when we are in our glorified bodies. And then we will just have, well, forever to increase our understanding and appreciation. Just a simpleton's thoughts....but maybe it will get things rolling.
No, God has not revealed all there is to know about Himself. John says we don't even know all that Jesus did while here on earth, much less all there is know.
Not homework but just class discussion. Supposed to take it up again on Monday.
Bro. Vaughn,
Seems to me too that the simple answer is no. I agree with you. However, I guess maybe Bro. Crain's contention is that the Bible teaches and we all agree that revelation is complete, would it be complete if He had not revealed all there is to know?
Guess I better get some sleep tonight. Has been a very exciting night and I don’t mean in a good way.
Yes, the revelation is complete. No, God has not revealed all there is to know about Himself. The revelation is complete based on the fact that God has revealed all that we need to know or all that He wants us to know. It would be quite presumptous to assume finite man could know all there is to know about God.
We will most likely NEVER fully understand God. He is infinite, and we are (and perhaps will always be finite). Perhaps part of the joy of eternity is forever learning the infinite God, His characteristics, His infinite power, His infinite intelligence, and His love.
Furthermore, if we could understand all there is to know of God, we would be God. This is a primary rule of theology proper.
Finally, God only revealed what we need to know in order to come to Him. We have EVERYTHING in the Word necessary to be thoroughly furnished until ALL good works. We have what is necessary to show ourselves approved unto God, workmen who need not to be ashamed. We have what is necessary "that the man of God may be perfect". We have what is necessary to be a light to our path and lamp to our feet. We have what is necessary to hide it in our hearts that we might not sin against God. We have what is necessary to be saved. We have what we need to receive and become "doers of the Word". (2 Tim 2:15, 2 Tim 3:14-17, Various Psalms, James 1). But remember, as children of God we also have the Holy Spirit to illumine our studies. He is also here to call to rememberence the things Jesus said. Point being - God didn't just give us the Word alone.

I guess John 20:31 would be a good Scriptural proof for the discussion? And maybe Isaiah 55:8,9 as well?
